Gender in the City
In March 2018, a study of gender representation in Almaty's toponymy was presented on the occasion of International Women's Day. Within the project on Gender in the City: a Brief Study of Almaty Toponyms, an attempt was made to address the issue of inadequate representation of feminine and female names on the streets and monuments erected in the southern capital. Streets named after women, as a rule, are secondary, marginal or dead-end. The masculinity of urban space forms a distorted perception of the place of women in history and modern society, further hindering progressive aspirations for gender equality.
